A Complete Guide for 2026
HMRC has significantly expanded its digital services in recent years. Today, almost every interaction you have with the tax authority can be done online. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the key HMRC online platforms available to you.
Whether you’re an individual taxpayer, a business owner, or a tax agent, understanding these services is the key to managing your affairs efficiently and staying compliant. All these services require a Government Gateway account.
The HMRC App
The HMRC app is the most convenient way to manage your personal tax affairs on the go.
What you can do:
- Check your UTR and tax code instantly.
- See what you owe: Get a quick view of your tax bill.
- Make payments quickly and securely to HMRC. See our guide on HMRC Payment Methods for more options.
- Access messages and updates from HMRC. This can help you stay on top of any HMRC Letters Explained you receive.
- View your tax history all in one place.
The app is free to download from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. You log in using your Government Gateway details, and like the web portal, it also supports multi-factor authentication.
Personal Tax Account (PTA)
The PTA is the desktop version of your tax dashboard and offers the full functionality for managing your tax code, filing Self Assessment, and updating personal details. It is the central hub for all your tax data. For a full walkthrough, see our detailed Personal Tax Account Guide.
HMRC Online Services for Agents
If you work with a tax agent, they use a more advanced set of online services. We, for example, have access to the Agent Services Account and the Self Assessment for Agents online service.
These agent-specific services allow us to:
- View your Income Tax records (Income Record Viewer).
- Manage all your tax returns on your behalf, as detailed in our HMRC Self Assessment Guide.
- Communicate directly with HMRC using our dedicated support line. See Contacting HMRC for how we can help you.
- Check the status of HMRC’s service levels and processing times, which we explain in our guide on HMRC Processing Times.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) has also been rolled out to all agent accounts to ensure the highest level of security for client data.
Making Tax Digital (MTD)
Making Tax Digital is a major government initiative to make the UK tax system more efficient, effective, and easier for taxpayers. It requires businesses to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software.
- Who it affects: The mandate has been rolled out for Income Tax Self Assessment, starting with sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 from April 2026.
- The 2026 Deadlines: The first quarterly update for the 2026-27 tax year is due by 7 August 2026, covering the period from 6 April to 5 July 2026. The next quarterly update deadlines are 7 November 2026 and 7 February 2027.
- Important: No penalty points will be issued for late quarterly updates during the first year of MTD (2026-27). However, penalties still apply for late Self Assessment returns and late payments. From the second year, points-based penalties will apply.
- What it means: You will need to use HMRC-approved software to record your income and expenses and submit these updates quarterly.
- How we can help: We are MTD-ready and can provide you with the necessary software, manage your digital records, and file your quarterly updates on your behalf. Read more on our Making Tax Digital page →
Service Availability and Help
