Your Guide to Getting Through
Contacting HMRC can be a frustrating experience. Long wait times, automated messages, and complex phone menus are common complaints. This guide provides you with the essential contact information and explains how to contact HMRC for Self Assessment issues.
It also outlines a faster, more efficient alternative: using our registered agent services to handle HMRC on your behalf. We can help with everything from Lost Your UTR? to understanding HMRC Letters Explained.
HMRC Self Assessment Helpline
This is the number to call for questions about your Self Assessment, National Insurance, and other personal tax matters.
- Telephone: 0300 200 3310.
- Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
- Best Time to Call: The least busy times are usually in the morning (8:30 am – 11 am) and on Thursdays. It is best to avoid Monday mornings.
What to have ready before you call:
To make your call as efficient as possible, have the following information on hand:
- Your National Insurance number.
- Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference). If you can’t find it, see our guide: How to Find Your UTR Number.
- Your date of birth and full name.
- The postcode for the address HMRC has on file for you.
Important: HMRC will not give you your UTR over the phone. They will only post it to you. For more information, read our guide: Lost Your UTR? Here’s What to Do →
Other Ways to Contact HMRC
- Digital Assistant (Chatbot): You can use HMRC’s digital assistant on their website for quick answers to simple questions.
- Webchat: HMRC offers webchat support for some issues. Availability may vary.
- Postal Address: You can write to HMRC. The address depends on the nature of your query. For general Self Assessment, the address is often HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS, United Kingdom. Always check the latest official guidance for the correct address.
The HMRC Online Services Helpdesk
This is a separate helpline for technical problems with online services, such as the Government Gateway, the HMRC app, or the Self Assessment portal.
- Telephone: 0300 200 3600.
- Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
They can help with issues like a lost User ID, a locked account, or not receiving an MFA code. They cannot help with questions about tax calculations or liabilities. See our Government Gateway Explained guide for troubleshooting.
Common Issues When Contacting HMRC
- Long Hold Times: The Self Assessment helpline can have significant wait times, often exceeding 15 minutes. See our guide on HMRC Processing Times for what to expect.
- Call Abandonment: Many callers abandon their calls while waiting in a queue.
- Security Verification: Failing the security checks can result in your query not being processed.
- Complex Queries: The frontline helpline staff may not be able to resolve complex issues, leading to your call being escalated and causing further delays.
The Fast-Track Option: Let Us Contact HMRC for You
As a registered HMRC Agent, we have a dedicated Agent Support Line. This means we can often get your issues resolved much faster than you can on your own.
Here’s how we help:
- Skip the Queue: We use a dedicated line for tax agents.
- Expert Handling: We know exactly what information HMRC needs and how to provide it efficiently.
- Direct Channels: For complex issues that cannot be resolved via the Agent Support Line, we also have access to the Personal Tax Query Resolution Service for Agents, where our queries are prioritized.
- Resolve Complex Issues: We can handle more complex problems like compliance checks (see our HMRC Compliance Checks guide), dormant UTR reactivation, and payment arrangement requests (see our HMRC Payment Methods guide).
We handle the HMRC bureaucracy so you don’t have to.
